In honor of Rare Disease Day (Feb 28), join Project Sleep for Rising Voices speaker Taya Austin’s idiopathic hypersomnia story! Taya, a community leader, conflict resolution professional, and basketball aunt, will share her decades-long journey to receiving an IH diagnosis and becoming an unstoppable advocate who doesn’t let her sleep disorder stand in the way of her dreams.

About Taya:

Taya Austin is an Alternative Dispute Resolution Manager and an explorer of many passions, based just outside Washington, DC. Known for her ever-present smile, she was diagnosed with idiopathic hypersomnia when she was 41. As a speaker with Project Sleep’s Rising Voices program, Taya shares her 20+ year journey to diagnosis to shine a light on the need for public awareness of sleep disorders and sleep-related health disparities affecting underrepresented communities.

What is the Story Sharing Series?

Project Sleep’s Rising Voices program serves the dual purpose of fostering a new generation of patient-advocates spreading awareness of sleep disorders while empowering participants. The Rising Voices Story Sharing Series invites viewers to gather online to hear a Rising Voices trained speaker share their story live via Project Sleep’s YouTube channel.

To improve public understanding of sleep disorders, Project Sleep’s Rising Voices program trains people with sleep disorders to share their stories through public speaking and writing with local communities, healthcare providers, news outlets, blogs and beyond. Combining the power of real-life stories with expert communication strategies, our Rising Voices trained speakers are effectively raising awareness and reducing stigma for all those facing sleep disorders.
